Potomac Valley Critical Access Hospital Scope of Services

DEFINITION
Critical access hospitals offer limited services and are, by definition, located more than 35 miles from a hospital or another critical access hospital or are certified by the state as being a necessary provider of health care services to residents in the area.  They maintain up to 25 beds including swing beds.  Critical access hospital provide acute inpatient care for a period that does not exceed, on an annual average basis, 96 hours per resident.  Hospitals cerified by the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) as critical access hospitals are eligible for cost-based reimbursement from Medicare if they meet a specific set of federal Conditions of Participations (COPs).

Potomac Valley Hospital is a Critical Access Hospital with licensure for 25 beds.  Services provided include Family Practice; Internal Medicine; Same Day Surgery; Out Patient and General Surgery; Radiology; Pediatrics; Orthopedics and Skilled Swing Beds.  The hospital does not have Obstetrics or Psychiatric services.

The Governing Board is responsible for reviewing and approving the hospitals scope of services.

The Emergency Department provides 24 hour coverage, level 3.  The Medical Staff includes a director of emergency medicine who oversees a rotating staff of Emergency Medicine Specialist physicians who reside on the premises.

Support services available include Cardiology Rehab; Physical Therapy; Social Services; Laboratory; Pulmonary; Radiology; Nuclear Medicine; CT Scanning; MRI; Ultrasound; Pharmacy; Dietary; Hospice; Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy.

The provision of health care is done in an organized and systemic manner, which utilizes the Nursing Process to establish and carry out a therapeutic regimen.  The nursing care is directed toward the comfort and well being of the patient while assisting the patient to reach a state of wellness and independence.

Seven departments extend patient care beyond the day of discharge.  They are Cardiac Rehabilitation, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Physical Therapy, Hospice, Respite Care, Diabetic Education, Respiratory Therapy, Elk Garden Rural Health Clinic and Riverside Rural Health Clinic.

The hospital institutes and supports numerous Community Service Projects.  Ex:  Health Screen Fairs, Diabetic Support Group, Diabetic Prevention Group, and American Cancer Society.
