Physical Therapy Services

Who We Are.. The Physical Therapy Department of Potomac Valley
Hospital consists primarily of Outpatient and Inpatient services. We also
provide Hospice Physical Therapy throughout Mineral County and skilled
Physical Therapy to our ‘Swing Bed’ patients at the hospital.
While the primary function of the department is the outpatient clinic,
located in New Creek, we continue to see growth and improvement in each
of the disciplines mentioned above.

MISSION STATEMENT
We at the Physical Therapy Department of Potomac Valley Hospital
have made it our mission to practice effectively, efficiently, and ethically
to achieve the highest functional outcomes for each of our clients. With
compassion and respect for every person we encounter, we will demonstrate
that in our clinic, and in our hospital, the needs of our clients are
our top priority. Our staff of qualified professionals will continue in
the patterns of service and excellence we have established through the
application of evidence-based interventions throughout the continuum of
care.
NEWS AND NOTES
Outpatient Clinic Remodeling. In December and January, a grass roots effort
by our staff and their families was made to remodel the outpatient clinic,
update its appearance, and to paint the walls. We went from hospital white
throughout to a brilliant Carolina blue gym, soft tan offices and treatment
rooms, and Sage green in the restroom and staff office. Our patients notice
that the clinic feels warmer and more inviting. Come and see for yourself!
NEW EQUIPMENT
Our outpatient Physical Therapy clinic recently acquired a new Hydrocollator
Hot Pack Machine, to accommodate a greater number of patients requiring
moist heat treatment. Moist heat is effective for reducing muscle and
joint pain, and can also help to relax muscles that are tight and tense,
or in spasm due to a neurological condition.
For our inpatients, we have recently obtained several pieces of equipment.
First, we picked up several pieces of exercise equipment, including Theraband,
Weight Bars, Cuff Weights, Theraband Grip Balls, a new cane, and a new
front wheeled walker. We also set up a Hydrocollator on the third floor
to make moist heat treatment more available to our inpatients.
Swinging for the fences. As you may know, Potomac Valley Hospital is a
Critical Access Hospital. With this designation, we can offer advanced
rehabilitation to patients who qualify by placing them in a ‘Skilled
Swing Bed’. This usually entails more aggressive Physical Therapy
Treatment over a longer duration of hospitalization. We want to place
a greater emphasis on seeing tremendous functional results from these
patients than we ever have before. This is what prompted us to obtain
more equipment, and it is also the reason our staff have been walking
the hospital floors nearly every weekend since November! We are doubling
our efforts on behalf of these patients, and we want every referring physician,
family member, and especially every swing bed patient, to recognize the
functional benefits of our hard work!
LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
The motto that the staff of Potomac Valley Physical Therapy has
chosen to describe the way we practice Physical Therapy is ‘Vision…Performance…Results!’.
In the lines that follow, you will begin to see how these concepts apply
to the treatment you can expect to receive at our clinic and in our hospital.
Vision. It is recorded in the Bible that “...people perish for lack
of vision.” It is after this pattern that we are constantly looking
beyond where we are as a clinic. Further, we apply the same vision to
our clients, seeing beyond their current state to the functional capabilities
they may achieve with our help. Performance. Performance is the culmination
of one’s vision. Our staff performs physical therapy interventions
based on current literature and on sound clinical judgment. In selecting
which interventions to perform, we listen to our clients and appreciate
their vision for where they would like to be. We strive to motivate each
client to perform at the highest level possible for them. Results. In
Physical Therapy, “results” and “function” should
always be spoken of in the same sentence. There is an alarming trend in
our profession for patients to present to Physical Therapy and receive
interventions that have no link to function. Our staff is committed to
the concept of restoring our clients’ ability to perform functional
activities that they enjoy. We welcome all who would like to see how our
vision and performance can help them achieve tremendous results!
So our slogan is Vision...Performance...Results!; but
what forms the bridge between these three elements? The answer is ‘a
goal’. To begin a rehabilitation plan with a client, we ask them
what they envision themselves doing better, then we set goals to reflect
that vision. When the time comes to assess whether our performance has
yielded superior results, we reflect back on our original goals again.
In a similar fashion, we at the Physical Therapy clinic of PVH have set
goals for how we will improve our practice in 2007. Our goals include
reaching out into the community to promote healthy living, preventing
hospital staff injuries through education, updating our current facility
, expanding our list of clientele, revamping and revising our current
wound care practices, and, as always, our goal is to see 100% patient
satisfaction. We welcome all former, current, and future patients, as
well as the many friends of this clinic, to come see these goals begin
to take shape!
